Sam Smith performed new and classic tracks during his own BBC special on Thursday (Nov. 9), following last week’s release of his sophomore album, The Thrill of It All.
The 60-minute broadcast was filmed in front of a live audience and offered the TV debut of new tracks, including “Burning.” Smith’s performances were backed by his own band and the BBC Concert Orchestra, adding a new dimension of drama to established hits like “Writing’s On the Wall,” where Smith’s soaring vocals becoming suspended over the lush maximalism of the symphonic sounds.
On “Stay With Me,” Smith played off the vocals of backup singers adding a gospel dimension to the sentimental track, while the relatively sparse instrumentals emphasized his playful vocal runs. And on “Burning,” the singer tapped into divine minimalism with just piano accompaniment.
“I’m so honoured and thankful to the BBC for giving me this opportunity to showcase some of my new music from my album in this amazing, intimate setting,” he said ahead of the showcase. “I can’t wait to sing some old songs and have a big old sing along with everyone.”
