It’s all starting to make perfect sense. What seemed like an anomaly just days earlier — Rihanna dropping the first single from the Star Trek Beyond soundtrack — now has a logical explanation: she’s a lifelong Trekker.
“Star Trek has been a part of my life since I was a little girl,” Rih says in a new promotional trailer for the Justin Lin-directed film due out on July 22. “My dad really is the one who introduced me to Star Trek, it just took me one episode to fall in love with this other world I couldn’t understand but I felt I could relate to.” In the three-minute trailer, the singer describes feeling emotionally connected to Kirk, Spock and the rest of the USS Enterprise gang.
“This is something that’s been a part of me since my childhood, it’s never left me,” she explains as her Trek tune, “Sledgehammer,” plays in the background over scenes from the movie. “I love Star Trek. It was automatic. I would do anything in terms of music. It’s such a big deal not only as a fan, as a musician… because Star Trek is such a big deal across the globe.”
For all those reasons, Rihanna said the track, co-written by Sia, needed to be “big and impactful, very emotional, dramatic [and] haunting at the same time.”
