Rationale (nee Tinashé Fazakerley) may not be a household name yet, but the Zimbabwe-born, London-based artist is well-known among big names. He’s collaborated with Katy Perry on “Act My Age,” a bonus track on the Target edition of her 2017 album Witness. Ellie Goulding has often covered his track “Tethered” at her concerts.
Pharrell Williams, who said Rationale “discovered the beauty in their voice,” spun the up-and-coming artist’s debut single “Fast Lane” on the Beats1 radio station. The song, which has already racked up over 15 million listens, will be released on his self-titled debut album, the majority of which he produced himself.
Ahead of the release of ‘Rationale tomorrow’ (Oct. 6), Billboard has today’s exclusive release of the video for album highlight “Oil & Water.” He adds a new dimension to the zeitgeisty tropical sound, with a strong undercurrent of moody, rumbling bass. Deep purple hues flash across the screen, the Tumblr glow aesthetic adapted to music video form.
“’Oil & Water’ was a really fun track to make,” Rationale tells Billboard. “I was really getting into using 808s at the time and I wanted to make something that was built around a massive bass-line. Sonically speaking, it’s one of my favorites on the album!”
The performer will be headlining his own October tour in the U.K. following the release of his album, making stops in Leeds and Manchester — then he’ll make his way to the Mercury Lounge in New York on Nov. 8.
