Could Rainn Wilson be the only person in Hollywood who doesn’t know who Taylor Swift is? That appeared to be the case on Monday (Dec. 14) when the actor had a rather amusing back-and-forth with the singer on social media.
It all started when Swift responded to a rave review from SPIN of her new album Evermore by using a GIF of Dwight Schrute, Wilson’s character from The Office, sobbing, “Thank you.”
Naturally, Wilson caught wind of the tweet as it went viral, and decided to poke fun at the superstar’s fame by replying to her gif, jokingly writing, “I do not know who this is. Inventor of the Swiffer?”
Swift was quick to get in on the joke, tagging the actor and firing back with the perfect gif of Jim Halpert — Dwight’s friendly nemesis Office played by John Krasinski — replying, “Touche” with a small shake of his head.
Ironically, the singer-songwriter has been a noted fan of the beloved NBC sitcom since her Speak Now days. In fact, back in 2011 she even starred in her own parody of the Dunder Mifflin office for a behind-the-scenes clip that accompanied her music video for “Ours.”
In the spoof, the hapless employees of an unnamed office speculated and gossiped about Swift’s character from the music video in the same mockumentary style of the sitcom. (“The sweater crow? Part scarecrow, part sweater, all blonde. Her?” one character mused. “I can’t remember her real name. But she uses a lot of company time to do inappropriate things on the internet.”)
Here’s hoping Wilson streams Evermore and gets acquainted with Swift before this social media feud shade turns into a full-blown office prank war!
