Welcome back to Takeover Tuesday, where each week, Billboard taps chart-topping artists and tastemakers to compile their very own playlist exclusive to Billboard‘s Spotify account. We give the artists free rein to base the list on whatever subject they choose. The only rule? Make it as creative and unique to them as possible.
Prettymuch are starting off the summer with brand new music, as the boy band just released their latest EP, Phases. The 6-song set showcases the group’s smooth R&B-driven vocals backed by a mix of pop and hip-hop beats, a representation of the music that has helped drive the Prettymuch sound.
For their Takeover Tuesday playlist, all five Prettymuch members — Brandon Arreaga, Edwin Honoret, Zion Kuwonu, Nick Mara and Austin Porter — shared some of their early inspirations, which they call their “go-to classics.” “These songs were some of the first songs that made us all fall in love with music,” the guys tell Billboard in a statement. “No matter what phases we go through, these songs will never get old.”
The 14-song playlist shows that Prettymuch is mostly inspired by hip-hop artists, with The Notorious B.I.G. making four appearances (“Juicy,” “Mo Money Mo Problems,” “Big Poppa” and “Hypnotize”) as well as other classics from the genre like Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre‘s “Still D.R.E.,” Public Enemy‘s “Rebel Without A Pause” and 112‘s hits “Peaches and Cream” and “Dance With Me.”
Prettymuch also show love to a couple of fierce ladies from the R&B scene, adding Patrice Rushen‘s “Forget Me Nots” and the iconic “Ex-Factor” from Ms. Lauryn Hill, whose former hip-hop group Fugees also have two songs on the playlist (“Ready Or Not” and “Killing Me Softly With His Song”). And if you’re wondering where the group got their funky pop flair, it’s thanks in part to disco greats Kool & The Gang, whose “Celebration” and “Get Down On It” are also part of Prettymuch’s picks.
The Prettymuch guys will be taking their Phases EP on the road this summer on the FOMO Tour, which kicks off on July 11 in Irving, Texas. The group also just released the video for the Phases track “Gone 2 Long,” which you can watch here, and check out Prettymuch’s “go-to classics” on their Takeover Tuesday playlist below.
