Pop vocal quintet Pentatonix gave yet another stunning mash-up performance Monday (Apr. 23), this time on The Late Late Show with James Corden. The powerhouse a capella group mixed a contemporary hit with a renowned R&B classic, seamlessly blending Dua Lipa‘s “New Rules” with “Are You That Somebody?,” an Aaliyah tune that climbed to No. 21 on the Billboard Hot 100 in December 1998.
In their typical formation, the members of Pentatonix lined up in a single-file line across the stage. Baritone Scott Hoying stood proudly in the middle, and instantly grabbed viewers’ attention by passionately serenading the first verse of the Lipa banger.
The surprise came after the “new rules” were counted, when tenor Mitch Grassi spiced things up by inserting the most recognizable lines of the ’90s jam. Pentatonix successfully made the two hits sound like they were meant to be sung together, despite the nearly 20-year gap between their releases.
This summer, the group will be embarking on their PTX Presents Tour in support of their freshly-released sixth studio album PTX Presents: Top Pop, Vol. I. “New Rules x Are You That Somebody?” was one of the singles preceding the album.
