Paul Ryan took to Twitter on Friday (Sept. 22) to rouse up support for tax reform and invoked an image of Taylor Swift in attempt to make his point.
The Speaker of the House posted a side-by-side photo of The Bangles and Swift, captioning his meme, “#1 songs have changed since 1986, but our tax code hasn’t.”
For reference: The Bangles scored a No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1986 with their smash single, “Walk Like an Egyptian.” Meanwhile, Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do” is currently enjoying its third consecutive week atop the chart.

It’s a pretty silly comparison made sillier by Ryan’s history of citing music, specifically Rage Against the Machine as his favorite band and then taking it back after the rockers made it pretty clear that was not OK. Also apparently, he owns or owned a Nickelback poster (see below). Needless to say, Twitter took him to task for the meme. See some of the best responses below.
You wish to speak of music, eh? pic.twitter.com/hou8H23bie

Beyonce has changed since 1999 but Paul Ryan hasn’t. Congress needs an update and a new speaker. pic.twitter.com/y0cPUvlkwX
