Scarlett Johannson spoke for many when she alluded to Niall Horan‘s dreamboat status as she introduced him on Saturday Night Live on Dec. 14. Before stepping aside and ceding the spotlight to the Irish pop-rocker, the actress formed a heart with her hands and beamed as the crowd cheered to greet him.
Horan steered in a hard-rocking direction with his first selection, and he brought “Nice to Meet Ya” — the Arctic Monkeys-channeling, barreling and brooding single he performed at the 2019 MTV EMAs — to the SNL stage. In a pale pink suit with an extremely Miami Vice vibe, Horan and his band coolly played through the track surrounded by a curved wall of neon lights.
Things took took a more sensitive turn with “Put A Little Love On Me,” which had Horan ditching his electric guitar for a stool and a microphone. Accompanied by a swoon-inducing pairing of a single violin and piano, Horan belted out his most vulnerable verses, begging the object of his affection to notice him: “When the lights come up and there’s no shadows dancin’ / I look around as my heart is collapsin’ / ‘Cause you’re the only one I need / To put a little love on me.”
Horan’s sincere face broke into a wide grin at the end of his performance, and it’s safe to say he’s thrilled to be easing into this new era (and his forthcoming album, which he’ll hopefully share more details about soon).
