As the newest HBO miniseries Room 104 suggests, anything could be happening in a motel room. But when it comes to New City and their latest video for “Dirty Secrets” — available today (Aug. 2) via Universal Music Canada — it may be exactly what you’d expect.
The late night tryst at the core of the video is a bit different though as the arrangement is a mutually seductive song-and-dance between a female lead and the band performing on an old-school analog television. The Toronto-based trio delivers the heat for their latest video with the same intense passion that the song emulates. However, it’s a racy fantasy that might just be anything but.
“We wrote this song after some wild nights in LA,” singer Adrian Mitchell tells Billboard. “It was easy to write because it was inspired by true events…everyone has dirty secrets, and we wanted to embrace them in this song.”
With flashing pink and blue lights, endless close-ups, and even a shower scene, the production team proved they were not shying away from the band’s vision. Directed by Sean McLeod (City and Colour, LYON) in a Niagara Falls motel room, the video adds a bit of danger and mystery to the pulsing, nightclub track.
“Dirty Secrets” is on the rise after entering the Canadian Top 40 chart at #22, while their previous single “Coachella” from April has reached over 1.6 million spins across all streaming platforms. With the irresistible pop sensibilities of New City, they are a secret you’ll want to share.
