Taking a break from Oscar-nominated fare to parade through New York City with a song in his heart, Tom Hanks stars in Carly Rae Jepsen‘s buzzed-about new music video for “I Really Like You,” and even hangs out with Justin Bieber in the new clip.
But don’t call it slumming — famous actors have a storied history of popping up in music videos, from Eddie Murphy‘s campy turn alongside Michael Jackson to Jennifer Love Hewitt‘s devastated “Hero” heroine.
After enjoying the Carly Rae Jepsen masterstroke, check out these 20 music videos starring Hollywood’s best and brightest:
Fatboy Slim, “Weapon of Choice”
Starring: Christopher Walken
Before he was tap-dancing in NBC’s live Peter Pan, Christopher Walken was stepping through a much trippier landscape. Grooving and flying through a deserted Los Angeles hotel lobby, Walken helped Fatboy Slim create the most imaginative visual of the producer’s career.
Kesha, “Blow”
Starring: James Van Der Beek
Months before he parodied himself on Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23, James Van Der Beek battled Kesha in the unhinged clip for “Blow.” Is that Dawson shooting rainbow lasers while surrounded by unicorns in tuxedos? You bet it is.
Vampire Weekend, “Giving Up the Gun”
Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal
For the music video for their Contra single, Vampire Weekend opened their Rolodex and recruited a wild array of talent — from the RZA to Joe Jonas — for an epic tennis tournament. Gyllenhaal pops up as a liquor-chugging player with an impressive forehand.
Beastie Boys, “Make Some Noise”
Starring: Seth Rogen, Elijah Wood & Danny McBride
With the Beasties’ Adam Yauch sadly too sick to appear in the group’s “Make Some Noise” video, the clip instead includes a slew of Hollywood stars paying tribute to the hip-hop icons, including Rogen, Wood and McBride standing in for the trio. Be on the lookout for Will Arnett, Kirsten Dunst, Rainn Wilson, Jason Schwartzmann, Maya Rudolph, Steve Buscemi, Chloë Sevigny and many others in the video.
Father John Misty, “Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings”
Starring: Aubrey Plaza
Would April Ludgate be a Father John Misty fan? Aubrey Plaza, best known for her deadpan Parks & Recreation character, takes the spotlight for the dark, shambling “Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings” clip, eventually waking up face down in the middle of a road and being shoved in the back of a van.
Michael Jackson, “Remember the Time”
Starring: Eddie Murphy
Remember the time when Eddie Murphy played a sultan trying to “entertain his queen,” and the only one who can impress him (and Magic Johnson) is Michael Jackson? Yeah, we remember that. How could we ever forget that Egyptian accent?
Aerosmith, “Cryin'”
Starring: Alicia Silverstone
Back before she was a virgin who couldn’t drive in Clueless, Alicia Silverstone was best known as the star of a series of Aerosmith music videos — most memorably the cinematic “Cryin'” clip, in which the young actress leaps off a ledge with a bungee and flips off her man instead of plummeting to her death.
Enrique Iglesias, “Hero”
Starring: Jennifer Love Hewitt
Enrique Iglesias’ “Hero” absolutely required an overly dramatic music video, and nothing quite says “overly dramatic” like a bag full of cash, Mickey Rourke playing a villain and the star of I Still Know What You Did Last Summer saving Enrique in the rain.
Fiona Apple, “Not About Love”
Starring: Zach Galifianakis
For her Extraordinary Machine tune, Fiona Apple formed an unlikely duo with comedy star/bearded lip-syncher Zach Galifianakis, whom she glares at as he prances around Los Angeles with his belly on display. This is perhaps The Hangover star’s most dramatic role since he appeared in this year’s best picture winner, Birdman.
Yeasayer, “Madder Red”
Starring: Kristen Bell
Um… what is that thing? Why is Kristen Bell cooped up in a house with it? How did freak-pop darlings Yeasayer sell her on this concept? These are mysteries not even Veronica Mars could solve, but it sure makes for one memorable music video.
Stone Temple Pilots, “Sour Girl”
Starring: Sarah Michelle Gellar
Sarah Michelle Gellar appears in this trippy grunge-meets-Teletubbies video as Scott Weiland’s gothic muse — presumably also his “Sour Girl.”
Gorillaz, “Stylo”
Starring: Bruce Willis
In the video for “Stylo,” the animated Gorillaz get into a car chase with the very real Bruce Willis, who all but yippie-ki-yays when the misfits are run off the road.
Elton John, “I Want Love”
Starring: Robert Downey Jr.
A full seven years before his career reinvention as Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr. starred in this low-key, one-shot video, mournfully lip-synching to Elton John while walking through an empty house.
Ed Sheeran, “Lego House”
Starring: Rupert Grint
The “Lego House” video takes the Ed Sheeran/Rupert Grint resemblance and beautifully runs with the ginger connection. Grint plays a Sheeran superfan (or “Sheerio,” if you will) who manages to briefly impersonate the star singer.
Sia, “Elastic Heart”
Starring: Shia LaBeouf
A follow-up of sorts to Sia’s “Chandelier” video, “Elastic Heart” finds Dance Moms star Maddie Ziegler reprising her role as mini-Sia while trapped in a cage with Shia LaBeouf, a former child star himself. The video earned its fair share of controversy, but the dance routine remains spectacular with repeated views.
Brandon Flowers, “Crossfire”
Starring: Charlize Theron
In what might amount to any man’s (or woman’s) fantasy, Killers frontman Brandon Flowers is rescued from peril by an artfully dirty Charlize Theron in this action flick video.
Bobby McFerrin, “Don’t Worry, Be Happy”
Starring: Robin Williams
Is there anything more light-hearted than watching Robin Williams dance and goof around in this light-hearted video? Bobby McFerrin certainly found the right comedian to convey the utter joy of his surprise hit.
Michael Jackson, “Black or White”
Starring: Macaulay Culkin
As the pre-eminent disobedient child of the early ’90s, Macaulay Culkin was a perfect fit for the “kids rapping” sequence toward the end of MJ’s epic “Black or White” video. Two decades and change later, who knew he’d be in a pizza-themed Velvet Underground cover band?
Eminem feat. Rihanna, “Love the Way You Lie”
Starring: Dominic Monaghan & Megan Fox
Megan Fox and Dominic Monaghan are the prototypical dysfunctional couple in this fiery (literally and figuratively) video for Eminem and Rihanna’s No. 1 smash.
Justin Timberlake, “What Goes Around… Comes Around”
Starring: Scarlett Johansson
Get a taste of Justin’s seduction strategy as he woos Scarlett Johansson in a retro mansion (complete with suspenders and a vintage microphone). Fast-forward a few years, and JT has stopped beguiling actresses and actually settled down with one.
