Missy Modell is ready to transport you to her sparkly, nostalgia-filled world with her new song “Galaxy,” which is premiering exclusively on Billboard today (Nov. 20).
The song — featured on the soundtrack for Netflix’s psychological thriller Cam — encapsulates all the ’90s dance-pop campiness that we’ve come to love from artists like Aqua, Dannii Minogue, La Bouche and more. From Modell’s cutesy “na-na na-na” hook to the kaleidoscopic synths, “Galaxy” is an alluring yet slightly haunting track.
“I’ve always had a love of ’90s music, specifically dance/electronic: Aqua, ATC, Ace of Base, etc. There’s almost an ominous element to the melodies. When Cam asked me to write a song that would pair well with the opening scene, I was immediately called to this genre,” Modell tells Billboard on contributing to the soundtrack. “I wanted to create something that foreshadowed, but also was inviting — a sinister dance of sorts. When my co-writer and I were making the song, the word ‘Galaxy’ immediately came to mind. Lola lives in this universe all her own and we wanted to encapsulate this through an interstellar lens.”
Cam, produced by Blumhouse (Get Out, Happy Death Day, Halloween), was released on Netflix on Nov. 16. The film stars Madeline Brewer (Handmaid’s Tale) as Alice (aka Lola), a “camgirl” who wakes up one day to discover her webcam porn account has been hijacked by a mysterious lookalike. From there, her life spirals as she loses control of her identity and the men in her life.
