It was an eventful morning for Miley Cyrus, who took over the Today show plaza for a Citi Concert Series performance Friday (May 26). In addition to singing her latest hit, “Malibu,” Cyrus delivered her Bangerz hit “We Can’t Stop” and her famed rendition of godmother Dolly Parton’s “Jolene.”
In the middle of her performance, Cyrus chatted with Carson Daly and the rest of the Today crew about her family and her new song. Toward the end of the interview, Daly touched on Cyrus’ previous performance of “Malibu,” which she dedicated to Ariana Grande and the victims of the May 22 Manchester Arena bombing.
“Just to know someone that goes through that, I think also it makes my life seem more real,” Cyrus said while discussing the tragedy. “I don’t like a lot of people around, I don’t really have the team and crew around me — usually I like to lay really low-key. So now I realize, I need to know that I’m around a lot of people and protect myself, protect everyone that’s here.”
Miley says that she plans to exercise greater caution in the future: “Not only for my safety, but for everyone else… I think it’s really been an eye-opener. For my friend Ariana, it’s just beyond me, and I can’t wait until I get a second to give her a big hug for sure.”
