Matt Maeson just released his latest EP The Hearse in April, but when his label Neon Gold announced that they’d be putting together a special compilation album to celebrate it’s 10th anniversary, he wanted to contribute something new — well, sort of.
He decided on “Tribulation,” a heart-rending song of a love that isn’t going to work, which he sang himself on his 2017 EP Who Killed Matt Maeson. But the call and response narrative of the song needed a female voice, and Maeson found his perfect addition in silvery singer VÉRITÉ.
“VÉRITÉ came in and really gave ‘Tribulation’ a breath of fresh air,” Maeson asserts. “I think having her be a part of it reveals a different side of the emotion behind it. Rather than it just being a conversation with myself, it’s a conversation with somebody else.”
The Brooklyn-based indie artist was equally as excited about Maeson’s decision to include her in the track’s update. “’Tribulation’ was one of my most played songs of last year, so I am so happy this collaboration came about,” VÉRITÉ adds. “Matt Maeson is an amazing artist with an absolutely insane voice. I’m thrilled to jump in with Matt on this track and celebrate ten years of Neon Gold in the process.”
Though VÉRITÉ is an independent artist herself, Maeson is part of the Neon Gold family, along with the likes of Charli XCX, St. Lucia and Tove Lo. The label is celebrating 10 years this year, and to honor the anniversary, Neon Gold is hosting a party on Sept. 29 in New York City with performances from Maeson as well as labelmates The Knocks, Marina & The Diamonds, BROODS, Your Smith, LPX and Alex Winston, with more to be announced. In addition to the bash, Neon Gold is releasing a compilation album of songs from the many notable artists that have been part of the label in its 10 years, NGX: Ten Years of Neon Gold.
“One of the best things about reaching a milestone like this is taking the opportunity to look back and celebrate all the incredible artists we’ve been fortunate enough to work with over the years,” Neon Gold Records’ founder Derek Davies says. “We had a lot of fun putting together the NGX compilation, which will feature a number of rare and exclusive tracks from some of our biggest acts, as well as a number of our newer artists covering some of our flagship earlier releases.”
The official track list for the NGX compilation is still being finalized, but Maeson and VÉRITÉ’s version of “Tribulation” will be part of the special album. NGX: Ten Years of Neon Gold will be available on Sept. 28, the day before the 10th anniversary party.
