Pop icon Madonna revealed in her new cover story interview with Vouge Italia that she moved her four youngest kids to Portugal to not only advance her son’s dreams of being a professional soccer player, but to give American living a rest.
First, the singer explained that her 12-year-old son David has dreamed of playing professional soccer for years. “I’ve been desperate to get him into the best academies with the best coaches, but the level of football in America is much lower than the rest of the world. I saw his frustration, and I also felt it was a good time,” she said.
Although she doesn’t say it explicitly, the music legend alluded to the President Donald Trump when she said she was keen to relocate her family from their home in New York City because “this is not America’s finest hour,” saying, “I felt like we needed a change, and I wanted to get out of America for a minute.”
She and her Malawi-born children, David Banda, 12, Mercy James, 12, and twins Stella and Esther, five, have now settled down in a mansion in the Portuguese capital of Lisbon.
The latest issue of Vogue Italia hits newsstands on Aug. 3.
