When it comes down to it, Lorde doesn’t really care if you thought her wild dancing at this year’s MTV VMAs was kind of odd. Frankly, that’s on you and maybe you just can’t handle the truth, the singer told Marc Maron during an appearance on the Sept. 7 episode of the WTF with Marc Maron podcast. In the latest episode of the long-running chat show, Lorde explained the unexpected performance, which found her dancing up a storm during “Homemade Dynamite” at last month’s show without singing because she was laid low by the flu at the time.
“It’s sort of embarrassing to watch someone experience intense joy. Way more than pain … and I think that’s why people find what I do quite disconcerting,” she told Maron. “People got, like, so angry about me performing at the VMAs. I just danced. I just danced! And I danced with full fucking joy. Some people were like, ‘We get it, we love it.’ And some people were like, ‘This is offensive that I have to watch this.’”

Bottom line? Lorde thinks she knows why people sometimes struggle with her signature dance moves: “It’s because it’s so private seeing someone experience such joy publicily.” Deal with it.
