2019 has been one epic year, and who better to close it out on the Saturday Night Live stage than Lizzo?
On Saturday night (Dec. 21), Lizzo performed two of the hits that defined her success on the charts in 2019 for SNL‘s mid-season finale. For her very first performance on the show, she opted for “Truth Hurts,” which surged to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 back in September and tied for the record for the longest reign atop that chart by a female rapper a few weeks later.
Lizzo brought every bit of that triumph to the SNL stage, effortlessly rolling through every beat — and dressed for the occasion, too. Her Gucci x Dapper Dan trench coat had the brand’s traditional green and red racing stripes sparkling with extra festive flair, and her boss band and dancers were outfitted in kind. (Guitarist Celisse Henderson, in her elegant overcoat and with her white Gibson SG in hand, later noted that she paid tribute to rock forebear and gospel icon Sister Rosetta Tharpe with her ensemble.)
To wrap her night (and SNL for the time being), Lizzo went with “Good As Hell,” another chart-topper of hers, along with some Christmas cheer and holiday-happy twerking. The 2016 hit saw a resurgence this year, and broke another record — this time on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop songs chart, where “Good As Hell” replaced “Truth Hurts” in the top slot in November. After suiting up in a sleek, rhinestone-studded satin tuxedo with a sheer back, Lizzo relished her spot center stage as her dancers took to the candy cane-painted poles behind them for a seasonally-inspired pole dance. Lizzo stuck the landing on every single high note — see her seven-second belt at the 2:23 mark especially — and was overjoyed at the end of the song, clapping and jumping up and down before offering a heartfelt thank you to the audience.
After the holidays, Lizzo will be gearing up for awards season: she’s the most-nominated artist — with a whopping eight nods, three of them for “Truth Hurts” alone — at the 2020 Grammy Awards, which take place Jan. 26 in Los Angeles.
