Billboard got to know singer-songwriter Lauren Daigle in this week’s episode of “You Should Know,” chatting with her about what the first song she ever wrote was, who her biggest musical influences are, her friendship with Selena Gomez and more.
Daigle, who grew up in Lafayette, La., tells Billboard that she penned her first-ever song at the age of five. It was raining outside, she explains, and she saw dirt mixing with water to make mud. “Mom, it looks like chocolate milk,” she told her mother, who then suggested that she go in the house to write a song about chocolate milk.
The singer also shares that she has a wide range of musical inspirations, naming the likes of Aretha Franklin, Roberta Flack, Amy Winehouse, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Adele, Frank Sinatra, and Ella Fitzgerald.
Speaking of her friendship with Selena Gomez, Daigle says, “She actually texted me because our managers exchanged our phone numbers, and it was one of the most beautiful texts. She is a true gem. And we’ve kind of just been friends through text messages and sending voice memos to each other, or sending videos and just funny things like that to each other.”
As for why she thinks people should listen to her music, Daigle says that her songs spreads the message of hope and unity, and that given the “crazy times” in the world right now, people want to have love and truth to hold on to.
“They want to be able to sit next to someone and not feel like everyone is a stranger in the world,” she explains. “And I think that this music has a connectability to it, where, people don’t feel alone. They feel identified, they feel known when they hear it.”
She adds that the response she has received to her music has been “insanely beautiful,” noting that she has read comments from people stating that they were suicidal, but hearing her music changed them, while other commenters feeling similarly reached out to other fellow fans for help.
“It’s watching this unity form between people who don’t even know each other because the sound is transcendent,” she says. “And so, I think for me that’s the best gift.”
