It’s almost time for the world to see Lady Gaga‘s biggest role to date, with critics heaping praise on the musician/actor’s turn in Friday’s A Star Is Born. Of course, it’s hardly her first role: Before launching her career as one of the biggest pop stars of our time with the industry-changing pop banger “Just Dance,” Gaga appeared in small TV parts and then went on to secure major onscreen parts as an actress.
Gaga got her start in acting when she was just 15 on an episode of The Sopranos and later appeared in MTV reality shows like Boiling Points and The Hills. Ahead of the Friday release of A Star Is Born?, we’re taking a look back at Lady Gaga’s film and TV history to and see how the star has blossomed onscreen.
The Sopranos (2001)
Gaga, then known as Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, had a quick role in The Sopranos season 3 episode “The Telltale Moozadell.” Gaga is on the bleachers flanked by two smoking teenage girls while A.J. Soprano swims a lap with his friends before vandalizing the school pool as Gaga and friends laugh at the destruction.
Boiling Points (2005)
At 19, Gaga appeared on MTV’s Boiling Points. Designed to test unknowing contestants’ patience levels for upsetting situations to see if their temperament can be contained within a set time limit, Gaga was a target at a restaurant that took away her food before she was finished and had the nerve to return a visibly used plated of food. Unfortunately, Gaga was unable to keep her cool for the $100 cash prize.
The Hills (2008)
On the cusp of becoming pop music’s next breakout star, Gaga appeared on season 4 of The Hills in 2008, a year before she hit the charts. Gaga went to Hollywood to perform at a fashion event and the show’s stars, Lauren Conrad and Whitney Port, were assigned to style her, not knowing that Gaga was about to become a huge star.
Saturday Night Live (2013)
Gaga appeared in a series of SNL skits in 2013 as a Genius Bar associate interviewed by Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, an overly excited talent show parent, a crazy co-op board member and more.
Machete Kills (2013)
Gaga starred as the gun-wielding and shape-shifting La Chameleón in the film. She attempts to kill her foes during an energy-packed car chase, only to be taken out of the chase when the truck she’s driving unexpectedly flips over.
Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014)
Gaga appeared in the movie as a sultry waitress, providing a beaten-up Joseph Gordon-Levitt with a glass a water and sending him on his way with a dollar in his pocket.
American Horror Story: Hotel (2015) and Roanoke (2016)
Gaga joined the cast of the horror anthology television show American Horror Story for the Hotel season in 2015, playing the role of Elizabeth Johnson/The Countess, a bloodsucking femme fatale. Her portrayal earned Gaga a Golden Globe Award for best actress in a limited TV series or TV movie.
Gaga also appeared in American Horror Story: Roanoke as Scáthach, an immortal English witch.
A Star Is Born (2018)
Perhaps Gaga’s most honest and true-to-self role to date, she plays a struggling artist named Ally alongside Cooper, an established musician who encourages her to find her voice and turns her into a star. The film has a whopping 95 percent Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, garnering more than favorable reviews from critics who praise the chemistry between Cooper and Gaga. A Star Is Born finally arrives in theaters Friday.
