Monsters will be running wild at 2017’s Super Bowl LI now that Lady Gaga has been officially named the halftime show performer.
The “Perfect Illusion” singer follows a lengthy list of icons who have taken the stage for the country’s biggest sporting event, including Madonna, Beyonce, Michael Jackson, Prince, and more. She will also be the fifth female Super Bowl halftime show headliner in its history.
Known for putting a show that’s anything but mediocre, Gaga has a catalog hefty enough — including a fifth studio effort titled Joanne on the way — to win over football fanatics at Houston’s NRG Stadium on Feb. 5, 2017. Here’s the set list of monster hits we hope she uses.
Lady Gaga Confirms Super Bowl Halftime Performance
“THE EDGE OF GLORY”
The opening line would make for the perfect kickoff to Gaga’s halftime show: “There ain’t no reason you and me should be alone tonight, yeah baby.”
“PERFECT ILLUSION”
Gaga could set the party off with her first Joanne single and perhaps rock tiny denim shorts while going H.A.M. on stage as she does in the video.
“PAPARAZZI”
It has been seven years since Mother Monster sung “I’m your biggest fan/I’ll follow you until you love me.” Also, who can forget her bloody masquerade performance of the smash hit at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards? While we’re almost positive the NFL wouldn’t want the VMA set replicated, a 2016 rendition would surely shock and awe on the Super Bowl stage as well.
“BORN THIS WAY”
Not only did the Born This Way debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 upon its release in 2011, its title track became a viral self-love anthem that is sure to have every little monster put their paws up at SB LI. And while she emerged from an egg at the 2011 Grammys during the song, maybe a special guest could hatch this time around….
“ALEJANDRO”
After paying homage to previous Super Bowl headliners Madonna and Janet Jackson in her 2010 visual for “Alejandro,” Gaga could salute the ladies who have rocked the halftime show before in a similar fashion in Houston.
“BAD ROMANCE”
Gaga gave romance an even badder name with this unstoppable 2009 hit that would surely have the entire NRG stadium screaming “Ra ra ah ah ah!” Just like its music video, a live performance would also showcase Gaga’s eye-popping style choices.
“TELEPHONE”
This 2010 hit would ring off in H-Town, especially if — wishful thinking here — two-time halftime show alum Beyonce made a third consecutive Super Bowl appearance alongside Gaga for this performance.
“POKER FACE”
This 2009 banger would bring back massive nostalgia for monsters both in the stadium and those watching from their respective Super Bowl parties. Plot twist! Kanye West, Common and Kid Cudi emerge for the “Poker Face” spin-off “Make Her Say.”
“TIL IT HAPPENS TO YOU”
No Super Bowl halftime set would be complete without a power ballad — or a powerful message. The outspoken songstress co-wrote “‘Til It Happens to You” with Diane Warren for the Hunting Ground documentary, which addresses campus sexual assault in the U.S. She’s performed it live at the 2016 Academy Awards and the 2015 Billboard Women in Music ceremony. The Born This Way Foundation creator could use the Super Bowl platform to amplify issues that matter to her most.
“JUST DANCE”
A grand finale of the RedOne-produced dance magnet would mark a full-circle moment for Gaga — it was her debut single, and her first No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. Hey, maybe Tony Bennett could make an appearance and bust a move.
