Kirstin Maldonado is coming into her own with the debut of her first solo single “Break a Little” and its music video, released Friday (May 19).
Earlier this month, the Pentatonix singer stirred up speculation about the start of a solo career, when she was featured on Helena Legend’s song “Dose of You.”

The electronic-pop-inspired track conveys the heartbreak and inner-struggles of a crumbling relationship. The song captures the personal battles of wanting someone who is not good for you.

“Every time I see your face, I break a little/ And every single night you stay, you take a little/ I can’t shake this feeling from my bones/ I know I’m better when I’m alone/ I call you,” she sings on the hook.
“I’m so proud of ‘Break a Little,’” Kirstin says in a press release announcing the song. “I always wanted to write a sad song that sounds happy. I think everyone can relate to this emotion. It’s about longing for something. You’re attracted to a vice or person you know you shouldn’t come back to, but you can’t help it.”
Along with the single, the music video also made its debut, starring Kirstin herself. The video mirrors the same clashing feeling, through dark rainy backgrounds, fluorescent lightning and ominous thunder heard in the closing scene of video.
The song marks the first single from Maldonado’s debut EP, which is set to be released this summer via RCA Records.
