King Princess unveiled the video for her single “Cheap Queen” on Thursday (June 13). She also released a new short interlude, “Useless Phrases.”
The video was directed by Symone Ridgell and sees the emerging pop singer (born Mikaela Straus) rolling around a big couch, watching nostalgic, ’90s-style videos on a cartoonish television screen. It’s undoubtedly quirky and fun, with the Brooklyn-based artist playing several different, over-exaggerated characters. “I’ve been alright/ I’ve just been doing the same shit I’ve always liked/ Like smoking and movies and homies who bring me wine,” Straus sings.
The new interlude, “Useless Phrases,” is more lo-fi and plays at the beginning of the video as Straus floats through the clouds alongside a flying sandwich, which she eventually takes a bite of.
“Cheap Queen” is the lead single from the artist’s forthcoming debut album, expected to arrive later this year via Zelig/Columbia Records. Straus will also be performing at several summer festivals including Bonnaroo this weekend, Firefly, Glastonbury, and Leeds.
