Kesha has waited nearly five years to release a new album. Someone, however, couldn’t wait any longer to share it with the world. Earlier this week, the singer’s eagerly anticipated third full-length studio effort, Rainbow, leaked online, just days ahead of its official Friday (Aug. 11) release.
Fans have gotten a pretty generous preview of the album so far, including the songs “Praying,” “Woman” and “Hymn.” But clearly some of her Animals needed it right now. The singer was doing her part to promote the album on Wednesday morning just hours after the leak, appearing on Good Morning America to perform those songs and talk about the creation of Rainbow, her first album since 2012’s Warrior.
“I’ve written every song on this album and they’re all so personal,” Kesha told GMA‘s Robin Roberts, who got choked up at times during the interview and performances. “This record, quite literally, saved my life. I hope you guys like it and I hope you can hear it, and I hope it helps people.”
It’s been a long, hard slog for the singer since her early success with 2009 breakthrough hit “Tik Tok,” followed by a 2014 lawsuit against onetime mentor/producer/label head Dr. Luke (born Lukasz Gottwald), which has effectively kept Kesha out of the spotlight (and the studio) for more than four years. The songs on the new album hint at her journey to healing, redemption, strength and, in some cases, forgiveness.
