Kermit the Frog invited some very special guests to join him during a surprise set at the 2019 Newport Folk Festival on Sunday (July 28). The unannounced appearance from from the most beloved Muppet found Kermit plunking out the beloved strains of “Rainbow Connection” on his banjo, backed by a band that included recently departed Sleater-Kinney drummer Janet Weiss.
“Please welcome my friend Jim James,” Kermit told the hyped crowd as the My Morning Jacket singer strolled out wearing a blue jacket emblazoned with shooting stars to share the second verse with his green pal.
Hi-ho, #NewportFolkFest! Thanks for showing this frog some love and singing along with the sweet sound of “Rainbow Connection.” Someday we’ll find it. — pic.twitter.com/LIK6KpqrPS

Weiss recently left Sleater-Kinney after more than two decades behind the beat for the trio, whose new album, The Center Cannot Hold, is due out on Aug. 16. James has been on the road all summer on a solo tour as MMJ prepare to release the 20th anniversary edition of their debut album, The Tennessee Fire (Aug. 2).
