Kelly Clarkson delivered a jaw-dropping cover of Sam Smith‘s “Stay With Me” to open The Kelly Clarkson Show on Tuesday (Nov. 26).
Backed by a gospel choir, America’s original Idol slayed the vocals of Smith’s hit debut single wearing a blue-and-black floral print dress. “Guess it’s true I’m not good at a one-night stand/ But I still need love ’cause we’re all human/ These nights never seem to go to plan/ I don’t want you to leave, will you hold my hand?” Clarkson sang, modifying the original lyrics to give them a more inclusive, non-gendered bent.
The day prior (Nov. 25), the talk show host belted out a rousing rendition of ’90s classic “Bitter Sweet Symphony” by The Verve, combining her chill-inducing voice with a full string section. “Cause it’s a bittersweet symphony, this life/ Trying to make ends meet, you’re a slave to the money then you die/ I’ll take you down the only road I’ve ever been down/ You know the one that takes you to the places where all the veins meet,” she belted out as the audience stood in awe of her powerhouse vocals.
