Kelly Clarkson got mellow for Wednesday’s (March 17) edition of Kellyoke on her syndicated daytime talker.
Clarkson covered Coldplay‘s 2002 song “Green Eyes,” giving the loping country ballad an even deeper sense of heartache with her hiccuping Southern twang, which soared above a swinging, jangly arrangement from her backing band, Ya’ll.
The choice was particularly on point since it came on the second St. Patrick’s Day during the COVID-19 lockdown, which might explain why the band was rocking green hats and suits as they rambled through the seventh track from Coldplay’s Grammy-winning second album, A Rush of Blood to the Head.
“‘Cause I came here with a load/ And it feels so much lighter since I met you/ And honey, you should know/ That I could never go on without you/ Oh, green eyes/ Green eyes, whoa/ Honey, you were a rock,” she crooned on the chorus.
The “Behind These Hazel Eyes” singer has been on a roll this week on Kellyoke, busting out a similarly meditative ballad on Tuesday with her hypnotizing cover of Chris Isaak‘s “Wicked Game” on Tuesday and Faith Hill‘s “Keep Walkin’ On” on Monday.
