Kelly Clarkson has done it yet again. The singer hopped on stage to open her namesake talk show, The Kelly Clarkson Show, with a stunning Kellyoke cover. The star led the show on Thursday (Sept. 30) with a cover of Billie Eilish‘s recent single, “Happier Than Ever,” and infused the song with a power entirely her own.
Like the original, Clarkson started off the track crooning into the microphone, while her backing guitarist swapped the acoustic guitar in the official track for an electric. By the 30-second mark, The Voice coach transitions into the grittier portion of the song and ups the ante — she sings the lyrics in a key higher than Eilish and peppers the words with her signature vocal riffs and runs. “You ruined everything good/ Always said you were misunderstood/ Made all my moments your own/ Just f—ing leave me alone,” Clarkson sang emotively at the end, closing out the song with a sustained high note.
This isn’t the first time that Clarkson has covered Eilish in one of her fan-favorite Kellyoke sessions. The 39-year-old recently sang “My Future,” also from Eilish’s Happier Than Ever album, on The Kelly Clarkson Show in October 2020.
Before covering “My Future” on the daytime program, the “Stronger” singer received flowers from Eilish after singing “Bad Guy” during an episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Clarkson thanked Eilish for the kind gesture on Twitter and revealed that she’s a fan of the young star’s music. “@billieeilish you are the sweetest ever,” she said, adding, “I love covering your songs! I am currently in love with #MyFuture.”
