Two days after Hillary Clinton surprised Katy Perry? to present her the Audrey Hepburn Humanitarian Award at the 2016 UNICEF Snowflake Ball on Nov. 29, the “Rise” singer was clearly still reveling in the amazing moment.
Sharing a picture with the former presidential candidate from the ball, Perry expressed her appreciation for the honor and Clinton’s appearance at the event, also reminiscing on the pain she felt last time she saw the Democratic nominee. “The last time I was in NYC was for Election Night,” she wrote. “I left covered in a blanket of sadness and despair because for me, and I imagine others, the results triggered a lot of dormant fears and emotions to the surface. I feared that we were not ever going to see the light of justice or fairness.”
Despite feeling this way, though, Perry recognized that Clinton remained an inspiration even after the disappointing election results. “Hillary helped me see that we’re all in this together, no matter where we come from, what color we are, or what status and education we have or don’t have. Hillary lit a fire inside of me that burns brighter and brighter every day, and that fire will NEVER be put out.”
This fire that Clinton sparked in Perry may have also set the path for her next material. After telling fans that she is motivated to fight against social injustice, Perry hinted that next year will bring some new music that could have a lot to do with just that.
“It’s funny, sometimes people who disagree with me just say, ‘Shut up and sing,'” Perry continued. “Boy, will I do so in a whole new way… next year. Hell hath no fury like a woman REBORN.” Could that all-caps REBORN be a hint of what her 2017 project might be called? We’ll have to wait and see.
