As an American Idol judge, Katy Perry values good sportsmanship. Now, the “Chained to the Rhythm” singer has shared her thoughts about how contestants can ensure their runs on the reality show put them in the most positive light possible, despite their results in their singing career.
“In the beginning, it’s gonna be a whirlwind,” Perry said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. “Just be as pleasant as possible and take everything with a Himalayan grain of salt. And trust the people that brought you here!’
“There’s is no pamphlet or tutorial,” fellow judge Luke Bryan added. “There’s no Hollywood for Dummies…you gotta be naïve. You gotta stumble into it.”
Lionel Richie then shared some advice that’s especially applicable to contestants who come out on the other side with a bright future ahead: “When the light turns green, there is no such thing as vacation. Take it! Go! Go! Go! I can’t tell you how many people have said, ‘I got a number one record, I’m going on vacation,’ and you never heard from them again.”
Idol alumna Carrie Underwood proved the payoff of a determined attitude by sharing her expertise with the Top 5 on the most recent episode. Hopefully the now-revealed final three — Gabby Barrett, Caleb Lee Hutchinson and Maddie Poppe — take Perry’s advice with more than a Himalayan grain of salt.
