Katharine McPhee was finally able to accurately say the name of everyone’s favorite pineapple-residing sponge. The American Idol alumna, who hilariously (and repeatedly) butchered the the name of the Spongebob Squarepants: The Musical title character while announcing the 2018 Tony nominations, evidently redeemed herself while presenting at Sunday’s (June 10) award show.
“Team McPhee scored big tonight by pronouncing SPONGEBOB right at #TonyAwards,” the singer and actress declared on Twitter. She announced the victory with photos of herself donning a Waitress-themed jersey to support the play in which she made her Broadway debut.
Earlier this year, McPhee flubbed a few pronunciations while announcing the Tony Awards nominees alongside Lesie Odom Jr., with “Spongebob” being the cause of much tongue-twisting. In good sportsmanship, McPhee was able to laugh it off immediately, and Odom got a kick out of the slip-ups as well.
McPhee also took to Twitter to poke additional fun at herself, posting a photo of the popular out-of-breath Spongebob meme, captioned: “Literally me after trying to say spongebob squarepants on national tv more than once.”
