Rising talent Shawn Mendes might have a number of similarities (and draw comparisons) to Justin Bieber, but that doesn’t mean he’s on the megastar’s radar.
In an interview with New York’s 95.5 PLJ on Tuesday (Sept. 15), host Ralphie Aversa brought up the 17-year-old Mendes to draw some comparisons between the two singers.

Aversa first interviewed Bieber in 2009, but when he tried to relay that early encounter to ask if the now-21-year-old Bieber had any advice for the new talent and fellow Canadian countryman, Bieber responded with a confused look that was either totally sincere or throwing some serious shade.
“Who’s Shawn Mendes?” Bieber responded.
“Oh!” Aversa replied. “He’s on Island. He’s from southern Ontario. He’s 17 years old. He’s got a song called ‘Stitches’ that’s, like, doing OK at pop radio.”

“Nice. Nice. Good for him,” Bieber said.
“Oh! Oh wow, so you don’t even…” Aversa said. “I thought for sure you might, because he’s also from southern Ontario.”
“No, I don’t know him, but I will check him out, for sure,” said Bieber.
