
It’s been a whirlwind few years for Justin Bieber. After canceling the final leg of a world tour to promote his 2015 album Purpose, the superstar has fallen in love, gotten married and released a string of one-off singles and collaborations with other artists. On Monday, Bieber announced he’s taking an indefinite break from making music, citing personal health and family reasons, just months after asking fans for prayers in an Instagram post.
Below, Billboard rounded up a timeline of everything Justin has accomplished both professionally and personally since the release of Purpose.
November 13, 2015 – Purpose is released
Bieber’s third studio album, Purpose, is hailed as a return to form, earning the pop star his sixth No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 and a trio of No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100.
January 3, 2016 – Confirms relationship with Hailey Baldwin
Years after first meeting backstage in 2009, Bieber confirms his relationship with Hailey Baldwin with an Instagram post of the pair kissing in the Caribbean. Baldwin, however, later clarifies that she and Justin are “not exclusive.”
July 20, 2016 – “Cold Water”
Justin’s first post-Purpose collaboration — “Cold Water” with Major Lazer and MØ — is released and eventually peaks at No. 2 on the Hot 100.
August 5, 2016 – “Let Me Love You”
Justin follows “Cold Water” up by providing guest vocals on romantic banger “Let Me Love You” by DJ Snake, which peaked at No. 4 on the Hot 100.
September 8, 2016 – “Deja Vu”
Post Malone cements his budding bromance with Justin by releasing the pair’s duet “Deja Vu” as the fourth single from his debut album, Stoney. However, no official video is ever released for the song.
April 17, 2017 – “Despacito” remix
Justin jumps on a remix of Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s smash hit “Despacito.” The remix spends 16 weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100, tying Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men’s 21-year record and helping usher in a watershed moment for the popularity of Spanish-language pop on American radio.
April 28, 2017 – “I’m the One”
Bieber teamed up with DJ Khaled, Chance the Rapper, Quavo and Lil Wayne on this tropical-pop bop that debuted atop the Hot 100 and kicked off the race for song of the summer in 2017.
June 4, 2017 – One Love Manchester
Following the terrorist attack at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, England, in May 2017, Justin takes the stage for a special performance at the One Love Manchester benefit concert organized by Ari and the pair’s manager Scooter Braun. Armed with an acoustic guitar, Justin performs “Cold Water” and “Love Yourself.”
August 17, 2017 – “Friends”
Collaborating with producer BloodPop, Justin surprises fans with “Friends,” a one-off single that leaves him asking, “Can we still be friends?”
October 20, 2017 – “Friends” remix
Just two months after the release of the original, Justin drops a remix of his latest single featuring Julia Michaels, who co-wrote the song with Justin Tranter.
November 2, 2017 – Back with Selena
Three years after their last breakup, reports surface that Justin and former flame Selena Gomez are back together, though neither star ever officially comments on the relationship.
April 6, 2018 – “Hard 2 Face Reality”
Rapper Poo Bear releases “Hard 2 Face Reality,” which features guest vocals by Bieber and rapper Jay Electronica, as the lead single from his debut album, Poo Bear Presents Bearthday Music.
June 2018 – Rekindles relationship with Hailey
By March 2018, Justin and Selena were reportedly once again on a break, and a few months later, he’s spotted back with Hailey. This time, it’s both official and exclusive.
July 7, 2018 – Engagement to Hailey
Justin proposes to Hailey in front of a crowd while on vacation in the Bahamas. Two days later, the pop star posts a romantic photo of the two on Instagram to confirm the news.
July 27, 2018 – “No Brainer”
Another one! Seeking to repeat the No. 1 recipe of “I’m the One,” Justin teams up once again with DJ Khaled, Chance the Rapper and Quavo for “No Brainer,” which debuts at No. 5 on the Hot 100.
September 13, 2018 – Just married
After a whirlwind engagement of just two months, Justin and Hailey are photographed entering a courthouse in New York City with a marriage license in hand. People confirms the next day that the pair were married in a small, private ceremony inside the building.
September 19, 2018 – Busking at Buckingham Palace
As rumors swirl about his secret nuptials to Hailey, video of Justin busking outside Buckingham Palace goes viral during a trip to London. Dressed in a tie-dye hoodie, the star serenades his new wife on the guitar as a crowd of onlookers record the impromptu performance.
October 25, 2018 – Sideways burrito mix-up
A hilarious meme of the pop star supposedly eating a burrito from the middle goes viral on social media. However, in a case of mistaken identity, it’s confirmed a few days later that the sideways burrito bandit just happened to be a Bieber look-alike.
November 15, 2018 – Justin confirms marriage
After months of speculation, Justin takes to Instagram to confirm his marriage to Hailey with a caption that reads simply “my wife is awesome.”
January 29, 2019 – Launches Drew clothing line
Justin wades into the realm of fashion design with the launch of his eponymous “Drew” clothing line. The collection features T-shirts, hotel slippers and other basic apparel emblazoned with a yellow smiley face and the singer’s middle name.
February 7, 2019 – Vogue cover
Along with Hailey, Justin poses for the cover of Vogue’s March issue, opening up in his first interview in two years about newlywed life and finding himself outside of music.
March 25, 2019 – Justin announces break from music
Justin takes to Instagram to announce he’s taking an extended hiatus from music, telling disappointed fans in a lengthy Instagram post that “nothing comes before my family and my health.”
April 18, 2019 – “Earth”
Comedian and rapper Lil Dicky enlisted Bieber to kick off the video for his Earth Day 2019 charity single alongside artists like Ariana Grande, Ed Sheeran, Shawn Mendes, Miley Cyrus and Charlie Puth. In the animated video, Bieber plays a cheeky baboon who’s “like a man, just less advanced and [his] anus is huge.” Before the song closes with the refrain of “We love the earth/ This is our planet/ We love the earth/ This is our home,” Bieber-the-baboon asks Lil Dicky, “Are we gonna die?” as a result of climate change, before handing the baton to Leonardo DiCaprio.
April 21, 2019 – Coachella appearance, announces fourth studio album
For his first live performance in nearly two years, Bieber took the stage during weekend two of Coachella as a suprise guest at Ariana Grande’s headlining set. Despite announcing an indefinite hiatus from music just one month earlier, the pop star dropped major bomb following his performance of “Sorry:” a new Justin Bieber album is coming soon.
