Following his appearance on the upcoming Fifty Shades Darker soundtrack (Feb. 10), jazz artist Jose James has dropped his new sultry music video for his track “To Be With You,” premiering exclusively on Billboard. The song is off his upcoming album Love, in a Time of Madness which releases on Feb. 24 through Blue Note Records.
The stripped-down video, shot in black and white, showcases James and Maisha Morris getting intimate. The video, which also features James getting comfortable with a snake, was directed by Tyler Dunning Evans who also helmed Deorro’s video for “Goin Up.” Choreography is by Alvin Ailey dancer Hope Boykin.
“’To Be With You’ is one of my favorite songs ever and the first time I heard it I thought it was very cinematic,” James tells Billboard. “The video connects all of my personas — soul, R&B, jazz, hip-hop – in a beautiful romantic way. I partnered with choreographer Hope Boykin from Alvin Ailey to bring the spirit of dance and spirituality that the writers Mali Music and Talia intended. This is a special dedication to all of my fans for Valentine’s Day, I hope you love it as much as I do!”
Jose’s music is described as an R&B focused foray into moody soul, electronic pop, and trap-addled beats, with the occasional influence of African folk, American gospel and Minneapolitan funk. In 2015, he celebrated the work of one of his greatest influences, Billie Holliday with the album Yesterday I Had The Blues: The Music Of Billie Holiday.
