John Legend may be the latest star to join the celebrity coaching crew of The Voice, but he wasn’t immune to a little bit of teasing — or straight-up “hazing,” as he says — when he first started on the show.
In a desk-side chat with the hilarious host on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Legend described his first couple of days on set and adjusting to working alongside Kelly Clarkson, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton.
After talking about his new single, “Preach,” Fallon asked Legend how things are going on The Voice, and if he felt like “the new kid on the block.” Legend’s answer? An immediate yes: “They hazed me!”
“My very first day, we have the blind auditions — you hear somebody you like, you turn around,” he explained. “But each coach has the opportunity to block one person, one other coach. They can only use it once. Every single one of them chose to use it on me! It’s the first time ever that any person was blocked by all three other coaches.”
The next season of The Voice premieres Monday (Feb. 25). Watch Legend’s chat with Fallon about The Voice below.
