Jessica Mauboy’s plan for European domination is taking another stride forward.
Just a week after performing during the second semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest, the Australian pop singer has been confirmed to play at the closing ceremony of the 20th Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland this August.
Australia’s Jessica Mauboy To Perform at Eurovision Song Contest
The Commonwealth Games (known as the British Empire Games from 1930-1950) is a multi-sport international event which, like the Olympics, is held every four years.
The indigenous performer will take the stage at Hampden Park Stadium for the “handing over” of the Commonwealth Games from Glasgow to the Gold Coast, the Australian city chosen to host the games in 2018.
This year’s Commonwealth Games will run from July 23-August 3, and organizers anticipate 1 billion TV viewers.
Mauboy performed “Sea Of Flags” at the interval of Eurovision’s May 8 semi-final, becoming the first solo artist from outside Europe to perform at the annual kitsch-fest. “Sea of Flags” opened at No. 40 on the latest ARIA singles chart, giving Mauboy her 18th top 50 single in her homeland.
Last year, Mauboy told Billboard she was determined to raise her profile in Europe. “There’s plans for the U.K. I see a big picture there and a whole other level and story there. Europe is one place I know that my music is perfect for. I feel my music is so connected in Europe, I want to go over there and tour and have my music known there. And I’ll fight for that to happen.”
