Jennifer Hudson is no stranger to singing competition shows, most recently taking her exquisite talent to season 13 of The Voice. The soulful singer — who made her debut as a judge alongside Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, and Miley Cyrus — steps back from Blind Auditions to reflect on her latest single “Remember Me,” revealing the record has an eerie story behind it all, in a never-before-seen video.
Billboard is premiering a clip of Hudson telling the tale of how “Remember Me” manifested in the studio and, more importantly, how she knew it was “meant to be.” The night before her studio session, the singer abruptly woke up from her sleep, thinking of a friend and how she felt an urge to tell that friend a certain message. While she initially ignored the thought, the next day when she met up with a songwriter she never met before, that songwriter pulled up a hook that listeners now hear in the song.
“The next day I get into the studio and I sit with the songwriter. He said, ‘I have this hook,’ and the first lyric was, ‘So do you remember me in those moments just before you sleep?’ And I was like, ‘OK, that was like my night last night. So this must be meant to be,’” she says in the Voice clip.
The entire experience came full circle for Hudson, who originally attempted to fight her inner voice before hitting the studio the next day. She went on to say, “How crazy is it that I would have that night I had before…that something broke my sleep?”
