James Bay gave fans classic rock flashbacks when he released his guitar-heavy tune “Pink Lemonade.” The theme remains strong in the video for the track, adding in a bit of nostalgia and childhood imagination.
The clip opens with Bay in a sparkling crew neck sweater and his band playing on an Ed Sullivan Show type of broadcast playing in the living room of a quiet suburban home. The crooner, who takes on the role as an astronaut trapped on Earth, is seen sneaking into the house’s garage late at night to build a rocket ship. The highly anticipated blast off at the end of the video reveals the truth—a young Bay sitting in a “rocket” made out of a silver cardboard box, and the fantasy of escaping our planet vanishes.
“I was reminded of a time when I was about four years old and I told my parents I’d had enough of living with them and would be leaving home,” Bay said in a statement announcing the release. “Obviously, I never went through with it. But the drama of filling a pillow case with my most essential toys, opening the backdoor and announcing to the kitchen that it was time for me to leave is what gave me the idea for the video.”
“Pink Lemonade” is the second single off the singer’s upcoming sophomore album Electric Light, set to release May 18. Watch the video below.
