“I’ll tell you exactly why you came here tonight.” Those were Halsey’s assertive words in the beginning half of her Los Angeles show, convincing spectators that the night would be anything but hopeless.
Opening the show with excerpts of her intro track “Prologue” from Hopeless Fountain Kingdom and Kanye West’s “Hold My Liquor,” it wasn’t until Halsey hit the stage to perform “Eyes Closed” that you finally felt as though you escaped your own world and entered the 23-year-old’s mystical world: the kingdom.
Appearing onstage as a queen would do, she sported a shoulder-length blue wig accompanied with bangs and a glittery ensemble. She came to make a statement, and it was now or never for the singer. The magical aura was felt all night Friday (Nov. 3) at the Forum in Inglewood, Calif., where she and a dancer held the majority of the intimate show on their own.
From orange and black fishes to monarch butterflies, the musician aligned her romantic visuals with the album, which was deeply inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Leading up to massive screens that served as the backdrop were stairs — so many that they somewhat evoked “Stairway to Heaven” vibes.
The show’s production paralleled her sophomore project so well that it made spectators feel like Hopeless Fountain Kingdom was a state of being, an experience, as she claims on the record. She sang her heart out, belting powerful tunes such as “Heaven in Hiding,” “Angel on Fire” and “Lie.”
Giving a shout-out to the LGBTQ community before starting “Strangers,” Halsey goes about singing the LGBTQ anthem as she normally would do if she were performing it solo. And with no signs of Fifth Harmony’s Lauren Jauregui, once it hits her verse on the song, you hear Jauregui’s sultry voice demanding the room as she appears atop the stairs in a black crop top and matching black pants with slits. The openly bisexual artists reenact the lustful tune, displaying their incredible bond front and center.
There’s a part of the show where we escape a magical, imaginary world and enter the “Bad at Love” world with fire and the frequent use of red and yellow objects. In her “Bad at Love” music video, Halsey wears a red and yellow Hawaiian-print dress, which stems from her red and yellow Hawaiian shirt in the “Now or Never” music video. This time, when she appears onstage, she is wearing a high-rise bodysuit with the same red and yellow print as her music videos.
“One: You live in L.A., and two: You suck at dating,” Halsey jokingly proclaimed. “Have you ever thought that it was your fault?” She smirks and begins performing her second single from her album, “Bad at Love.”
There was a moment of nostalgia when she performed “Ghost,” “Castle” and “Roman Holiday” off her debut studio album, Badlands. The alternative musician also sang a raw and stripped-down version of the hit single she did with The Chainsmokers, “Closer.” Aside from a piano, the singer-songwriter showed off her raspy tone, proving she didn’t have to add fancy production to create one of the most heartfelt moments of the night.
Nearing the end, the show picked up with an appearance from her boyfriend, G-Eazy, who performed his single “No Limit.” She helped her beau rap the song, jammed out dancing across the stage, and the two lovers ended the guest performance with a passionate kiss for all to see.
Halsey waited until the end of the night to perform her most iconic song, “Now or Never,” and the arena was overjoyed with what she had to offer. The pop singer spoke from the heart, gave it her all and ultimately delivered on her promise that concertgoers would know why they went to her grand show when they departed ways. She created a space of hope: hope to prove that no one is alone and that her music could be the hope they look to. It was anything but hopeless at the Hopeless Fountain Kingdom Tour.
