Halsey has always had a flair for the dramatic, and she took it up a notch in announcing the title and release date of her new single.
At the end of her second night (May 9) performing at New York City’s Webster Hall, a show where the star played her Hopeless Fountain Kingdom album all the way through, Halsey dropped a curtain over the stage, announcing that her new single “Nightmare” would be due out May 17. She later confirmed the news by tweeting out a video of the moment.
While many fans were delighted by the news, some were unsurprised — when Halsey announced her two night residency at Webster Hall, fans quickly pointed out that the tickets for the event went on sale at 5:17 p.m. last Friday (May 3). This, along with the star’s social media blackout and “Nightmare” promotional website, led fans to believe that a new project was coming on May 17.
But Halsey remained tight-lipped about the date up until the dramatic reveal. In a fan-captured video of the star leaving her first show at Webster Hall on Wednesday, Halsey told fans that “there’s new music coming sooner than you think.” But when asked if the May 17 rumors were true, she simply responded “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
