NBC’s Hairspray Live! aired Wednesday night (Dec. 7) and it was undoubtedly one of the best live TV musicals we’ve seen so far. But was it the greatest Hairspray we’ve seen so far?
Hairspray has a lengthy history. The John Waters original, starring Ricki Lake as Tracy Turnblad and Divine as Edna Turnblad, hit theaters in 1988 (it prominently featured music but was not a musical). In 2002, the stage musical adaptation Hairspray debuted on Broadway featuring Harvey Fierstein in the Divine role. Its success lead to the 2007 musical film featuring John Travolta taking over Fierstein’s spot as Edna.
And now with Hairspray Live!, the 2016 TV musical on NBC, we got to see Fierstein return to the role Divine originated.
