Hailee Steinfeld’s new music video for “Most Girls,” released late Monday, starts out with every woman’s biggest dating nightmare: Things appear to be going great when suddenly he leans in and says, “You’re just not like most girls.”
Steinfeld excuses herself from the date and quickly changes out of her dress and heels. With lyrics like, “Most girls are smart and strong and beautiful/ Most girls work hard, go far, we are unstoppable” and “I wanna be like most girls,” the singer explains that being like “most girls” is something to be proud of.
Her anthem celebrates how women’s different tastes make them uniquely beautiful and filled with potential. Steinfeld’s wardrobe is fluid and changes throughout the video to mirror different lifestyles. In one scene, she sports black workout clothes (made by Mission, a brand Steinfeld represents) while boxing. Another features her in the backseat of a car dancing in a silver cocktail dress paired with a bright red lip. Later, she reads on a couch while wearing a collared dress and thigh-high socks. Steinfeld still looks fabulous and confident when she dons sweatpants and paints in the middle of an art studio.
Steinfeld and a group of other women appear wearing T-shirts with phrases describing most girls’ characteristics. Among them: “Relentless,” “Unstoppable” and “Committed.”
Maybe after watching Steinfeld’s new music video, guys will think twice before they try to compliment a woman by telling her she’s not like “most girls.”
