Meet electro-pop virtuoso Gibbz. After earning a degree from Berklee College of Music, where he studied music production, the singer/producer (real name Mike Gibney) got his start in the industry as a full time audio engineer. After 5 years on the road and in studios with international touring artists, he realized being an engineer is a “thankless, miserable existence” (in his words).
Luckily, that path led him to work for a crew that went on to form the Lowtemp record label, founded by Gramatik. They “convinced [me] that it’s OK to drink copious amounts of alcohol and make everyone within a 30 ft radius uncomfortable,” he joked of the project’s genesis. “Out of [that] drunken, obnoxious, offensive mess of a man, GIBBZ was born.”
After dropping his debut EP Who Gibbz a F#@$ last year and his most recent single “Play The Fool” in March, the singer/producer now shares his latest “I Found You” exclusively with Billboard.
“’I Found You’ is an ode to summer romance. It’s about falling in love with someone before you actually know who they are,” he tells Billboard. “The ‘this is the one’ punch-drunk love without the ‘what was I thinking?’ hangover.”
The track will appear off his forthcoming EP via Ghost Beach’s Crazy Heart Records imprint. And already netting tour dates with the likes of (new label mates) Ghost Beach, Cherub and The Floozies, as well as appearances at Coachella and Bonnaroo, the singer/producer is eyeing a main stage takeover all his own, with his next gig set for this weekend’s Electric Forest.
