Detroit singer-songwriter Flint Eastwood, née Jax Anderson, is indie label Neon Gold Records’ newest signee. Anderson has supported music and arts in her hometown by founding a recording compound and creative hub called Assemble Sound in 2015 and releasing a pair of EPs, including 2015’s Small Victories. Today, she premieres the musically grandiose and empowering track “Queen” as her Neon Gold debut.
As an artist who writes, performs, designs, and directs everything Flint Eastwood, Anderson felt it necessary to call out the normalized sexism she faces as a creative.
“’Queen’ was written about the first time I was asked what it was like being a woman in music,” Anderson discloses in a press release. “I had never considered myself different for being a woman. I have always set the standard with my team that I am the boss, regardless of my gender identity.”
The brass and bass-heavy intro to “Queen” announces a victorious rallying cry for all women leaders. She challenges the listener, repeating “You couldn’t last a day in my crown” during a string-tinged bridge. But as confrontational as “Queen” is, it also celebrates and advocates for all who identify as women.
