Fiona Apple gave a winking endorsement to the Democratic Joe Biden/Kamala Harris ticket over the weekend with a cover of George and Ira Gershwin’s 1930 ditty “Bidin’ My Time.” In the video posted by her friend Zelda Hallman, Apple appears to throw her vote behind the former two-term Vice President and current Senator from California in their bid to unseat President Trump.
While singing the throwback tune a cappella, Apple croons, “Some fellas love to tiptoe through the tulips/ Some fellas go on singing in the rain/ Some fellas keep on painting skies with sunshine/ Some fellas must go swingin’ down the lane/ But I’m bidin’ my time/ ‘Cause that’s the kinda guy I’m,” capping the brief clip by slapping an “I Voted” sticker over her right eye.
The song composed by George Gershwin with lyrics by Ira Gershwin appeared in the 1930 musical Girl Crazy, and has been covered over the years by everyone from Sarah Vaughan to Nat King Cole and Ella Fitzgerald. The Fetch the Bolt Cutters singer has spoken out in support of a number of causes this year, including Black Lives Matter, as well as lending her voice to a documentary about how to keep an eye on rogue ICE agents.
And she’s not the only one supporting Biden in song in the run-up to the Nov. 3 election. During the latest all-star virtual fundraising event for Biden on Sunday night (Oct. 25), Cher debuted her new single, “Happiness is Just a Thing Called Joe.” Like Apple, the Oscar winner took on an oldie but a goodie, in this case a tune composed by Harold Arlen for the 1943 movie musical Cabin in the Sky.
