Fiona Apple made her thoughts on president-elect Donald Trump very clear this week when she posted a parody of Nat King Cole’s “The Christmas Song” (aka “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire”) with decidedly anti-Trump lyrics. “Trump’s nuts roasting on an open fire/ As he keeps nipping at his foes,” she sings in a Tumblr video featuring her new holiday staple, “Trump’s Nuts Roasting on an Open Fire.”
“You cry creepy uncle every time he arrives/ For he keeps clawing at our clothes,” she adds in a version that also touches on the 70-year-old reality show star’s alleged history of sexual assault and divisive comments about African-Americans. “Everybody knows some money and entitlement can help to make the season white/ Mothers of color with their kids out of sight will find it hard to sleep at night,” she continues on the a cappella track. “They know that Trump is on his way/ He’s got black boys in hoodies locked up on his sleigh.” (The video first surfaced on the Fiona Apple Rocks Tumblr page on Monday (Dec. 5).
Apple — who hasn’t released a new album since 2012’s The Idler Wheel… — joins a growing list of artists who’ve released songs critical of the New York real estate developer, including Modern Baseball, YG, Death Cab For Cutie and El Vy, among others. If the message wasn’t clear enough, the singer makes her feelings crystal at song’s end, when she rips up a photo of the political neophyte while grimacing into the camera.
