Finneas channels the sadness and confusion that comes with falling out with a friend on his latest single “I Lost A Friend,” the video for which was released on Tuesday (June 25).
The cinematic visual features the singer-songwriter, born Finneas O’Connell, wandering around a field at sunset, wearing a suit and tie.
“I know I’ll be alright / But I’m not tonight / I’ll be lying awake counting all the mistakes I’ve made,” he laments on the track. “Replaying fights / I know I’ll be alright / But I’m not tonight.”
The intimate tune opens with emotional vocals from the singer, accompanied by soft piano chords. The L.A.-based artist wrote the song after falling out with his childhood best friend. “I’ve made a lot of music covering romantic relationships and a lot covering family but I’d never been able to articulate what it feels like to lose a friend until now,” O’Connell previously said in a statement. “Hope this song gives you some comfort if you’ve ever felt the same way.”
The 21-year-old singer-songwriter — who penned international smash hits “Ocean Eyes” and “When the Party’s Over” sung by his sister, Billie Eillish — is slated to play at Summerfest in Milwaukee and Diplo‘s Mad Decent Block Party Festival in Boston this summer.
