From ‘X Factor’ to Hiatus, A Fifth Harmony Timeline

After nearly six years as a group, Fifth Harmony are taking an indefinite hiatus to pursue solo careers.

As Harmonizers mourn the (temporary) loss of the girl group, let’s take a look back at where it all began, as Billboard rounds up the highlights from the past half-decade-plus.

July 2012: Ally Brooke, Normani, Dinah Jane, Lauren Jauregui and Camila Cabello each audition separately for The X Factor before judges mash them together into one fierce female band. Their band name was originally “Lylas” and the first song they performed as a five-piece was “Impossible” by Shontelle.

October 2012: Under a new band name, 1432, the girls perform Taylor Swift’s “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” on The X Factor.

November 2012: Third name’s the charm! Viewers choose Fifth Harmony as the ensemble’s long-term title.

December 2012: Would you have guessed Fifth Harmony only finished in third place on The X Factor? The final song they perform on the show is The Beatles’ “Let It Be.”

January 2013: The group signs to judge Simon Cowell’s label Syco Music in a joint deal with Epic Records.

July-August 2013: Fifth Harmony spends the summer on a promotional tour performing in shopping malls. The “Harmonize America” tour ends with five pop-up shows in one day in New York City.

September 2013: Cher Lloyd invites Fifth Harmony as the opening act for her I Wish Tour, and they announce their own headlining tour (in proper venues this time).

October 2013: The band’s debut EP, Better Together, is released; 28,000 copies are sold in the first week, leading it to peak on the Billboard 200 at No. 6. The lead single, “Miss Movin’ On,” peaks on the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 76.

November 2013: Fifth Harmony perform on the red carpet at the 2013 American Music Awards. They also open for X Factor judge Demi Lovato on her Neon Lights Tour.

January 2014: MTV includes Fifth Harmony in their annual Artists to Watch concert, an event dedicated to highlighting rising pop artists.

July 2014: The lead single from the band’s upcoming debut album, “Boss,” is released.

August 2014: “Miss Movin’ On” earns the band the title of Artist to Watch the MTV Video Music Awards.

December 2014: Thanks, Obama! The girls visit the White House to cover Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” at the National Christmas Tree Lighting.

February 2015: Fifth Harmony release their debut album, Reflection. “Sledgehammer” — penned by Meghan Trainor — is their first single to enter the top 40 on the Hot 100 and “Worth It” (featuring Kid Ink) peaks at No. 12, their highest-charting single yet.

March 2015: The kids have spoken: Fifth Harmony wins favorite new artist at the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards.

June 2015: The girls and Kid Ink take the stage at Jimmy Kimmel Live to perform “Worth It” for their debut late-night appearance.

August 2015: Fifth Harmony sweeps the Teen Choice Awards, taking home awards for choice summer song (“Worth It”), choice music group: female and choice female hottie.

November 2015: Cabello links up with Shawn Mendes for “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” sparking romance rumors between the pair and raising eyebrows about Cabello’s future with the group.

December 2015: Fifth Harmony are named group of the year at the Billboard Women in Music ceremony.

February 2016: Reflection is certified gold and the girls announce their second studio album, 7/27. Lead single “Work From Home” (featuring Ty Dolla $ign) is released, peaking at No. 4 on the Hot 100.

May 2016: 7/27 debuts at No. 4 on the Billboard 200.

August 2016: “Work From Home” wins best collaboration at the VMAs.

June 2016: The girls commence their international 7/27 Tour.

October 2016: Cabello is featured on Machine Gun Kelly’s single “Bad Things.”

December 2016: Jauregui becomes the next member to stray from the pack, teaming up with electronic duo Marian Hill for “Back to Me.”

December 2016: The girls perform as a quintet for the final time on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, before Cabello announces her departure from the group.

January 2017: Fifth Harmony performs for the first time as a quartet at the People’s Choice Awards, at which they also win favorite group for the second year in a row.

March 2017: “Work From Home” wins the Kids’ Choice Award for favorite song. 5H also win favorite music group for the second year in a row.

April 2017: The girls nab their second consecutive wins at the Radio Disney Music Awards for both best group and fiercest fans.

May 2017: Jauregui is featured on Halsey’s single “Strangers.” Cabello also releases her debut solo single “Crying in the Club.”

June 2017: Fifth Harmony release their next single, “Down” featuring Gucci Mane, which peaks at No. 42 on the Hot 100. Meanwhile, Lost Kings borrow Ally Brooke for their track “Look at Us Now.”

August 2017: Their self-titled album is released, debuting at No. 4 on the Billboard 200. They win three Teen Choice Awards: choice music group, choice song: group (“Down”), choice summer group and choice fandom.

September 2017: Fifth Harmony’s PSA Tour begins. Cabello releases “Havana” (featuring Young Thug), which eventually hits No. 1 on the Hot 100.

October 2017: Dinah Jane is featured on RedOne’s single “Boom Boom.”

November 2017: Jauregui is featured on Steve Aoki’s single “All Night.”

January 2018: Topic features Brooke on his track “Perfect.” Cabello releases her next single, “Never Be the Same,” just a couple of days before releasing her solo debut album Camila.

February 2018: Last but not least, Normani collaborates with R&B heartthrob Khalid for “Love Lies” on the Love, Simon soundtrack.

March 19, 2018: Fifth Harmony announces their indefinite hiatus.
