It’s not a Taylor Swift album without fans speculating about who each song is about, despite Swift warning everyone not to do it for Reputation. Even with Swift’s own warning, fans can’t help but wonder if “Dress” is about her best friend Ed Sheeran.
In the song, Swift sings “I don’t want you like a best friend.” Does this mean her relationship with Sheeran meant something more?
Sheeran says no. In an Instagram livestream with men’s lifestyle publication August Man based in Singapore, Sheeran squashes fans’ Ed-Taylor “Dress” shipping, saying “I don’t think it is [about me]. I think if you read into it… it’s not… you know, because she mentions someone with a buzzcut haircut, and I’ve never had a buzzcut haircut.”
Sheeran may not have been the one Swift wanted to take her dress off in the song, but her long-term boyfriend Joe Alwyn, who at one point in their relationship sported a buzzcut, fits the description.
