Nashville-based soul artist Devon Gilfillian has got a little hustle going on in the mesmerizing video for his Afrobeat-inspired single “Get Out and Get It,” premiering exclusively on Billboard today (May 30).
The video was shot during a trip to Johannesburg, South Africa. The trip saw Gilfillian immersing himself in the land and culture that birthed the sounds of his latest single. It’s a fitting visual homage that directly links the song’s sizzle and shuffle with the roots of the song’s origins.
“Afrobeat is the soul behind ‘Get Out and Get It.’” Gilfillian tells Billboard. “I’m so grateful that I didn’t only get to visit the motherland of where this music came from, but I also got to capture some of that magic in this music video.”
The visual not only traverses the sprawling vistas and bustling cityscapes of South Africa, but it reaches an entirely new plane of existence with its psychedelic cinematography. While an array of colors tint his surroundings and landscape shots fold into one another, Gilfillian stands above it all with his arms outstretched like he has the whole world at his fingertips.
“I wanted the video to take the realness and rawness of Johannesburg and take it to another planet,” Gilfillian adds.
Whether it’s the land that inspired it or the sounds that Gilfillian created, “Get Out and Get It” is pure magic.
