Amidst all the praise for TIME‘s Person of the Year, “The Silence Breakers,” Demi Lovato made sure to call out the magazine for its hypocrisy for including the current president, Donald Trump, as runner-up.
While the magazine claims to choose the person of the year based off their impact for better or for worse, holding these two as honorees side by side didn’t sit well with plenty of people. It should be noted that within the cover story, Trump himself is mentioned eight times, as both a harasser and inspiration for women to speak out.
Lovato took to Twitter to share her qualms with the choice to still include him as runner up, tweeting, “Time mag highlights brave women coming forward against sexual assault on the cover but names a man with sexual assault allegations against him runner up to person of the year.. Really @TIME? #hypocrites.” She also expressed that while she realized the winners were based off of impact on the news, she believes the features “should be for doing something positive or brave LIKE the women on the cover.”

I’ve become less vocal about my distain for certain people over the past year because it only divides our country even more but this is worth speaking up about. @TIME mag – very disappointed in your hypocrisy and disrespect toward the women on your cover.

To be named POTY by @TIME it should be for doing something positive or brave LIKE the women on the cover. It’s annoying that it’s just about impact on the news.

?Lovato also retweeted a common sentiment shared by those who have reacted on Twitter, suggesting that Kesha should have been included. Of course, this would be incredibly fitting, but she may be unable to speak on the issue due to the current nature of her legal matters.
Kesha needs to be there
