After singing the song around the world as part of A Very Potter Musical, Darren Criss has finally released an official version of his song “Not Alone.”
The Glee and Hedwig and the Angry Inch star announced the news on Facebook Wednesday (Dec. 9), explaining the song’s backstory with a video.
It started originally as a submission for an original song contest with American Idol but didn’t make the cut. He said the song always stuck out to him and he went on to give it a proper recording, which he is now releasing a gift to his fans.
“This song is just so layered with so much meaning for me and for so many people that it was time to release it for everybody to listen to,” Criss said in the video.
In his introduction to the video on Facebook, Criss also posted that he is continuing to work on a full-length album but the majority of the material he’s been working on over the years does not feel ready for release. The exception to that sentiment is “Not Alone.”
In his introduction to the video on Facebook, Criss added: “Many of you have been wondering for years where a full-length album is. I can promise that while I’ve been continually working towards putting one out, I have equally been primarily focused on making it a body of work that I’m proud of. As such, I have in fact, written and recorded dozens of songs, but a majority of them haven’t felt quite ready. However, a track that always stood out on its own was a full studio version of ‘Not Alone.’ Thanks to Represent, we’ve found a unique way to release this song, that will help in this goal of putting out a full album.”
A download of the song is available only with a purchase of a T-shirt that can be purchased here for a limited 14-day window. Watch the video below.
